Why do some gay people say that the Spartans were gay ?

Spartans considered homosexuality a weakness and an illness of the mind, homosexuals in Spartan society could not join the Spartan Military and were often killed. How could you possibly think the Spartans were gay ? The Athenians were gay...not the Spartans.
