How can one become a historian?

I am interested in the history of warfare. Anything before the development of rifle's and other sorts of dishonarable weaponry. For example, Spartan warfare, Saxon, Celtic, ect. I would like to become an expert in the types of weaponry, armour, tactics ect, but is there a field for this type of history of is it no vast enough?
